It was my second time in Puerto Escondido this year and I’ve spent a lot of money, mainly on food. There were so many restaurants that I wanted to try and somehow, I just couldn’t resist all the food. Also, there was absolutely no need to cook at 33 degrees without air conditioning.
Puerto Escondido is divided into three parts. La Punta, Playa Zicatela and Playa Carrizalillo. According to most people -and me- La Punta is the nicest area in the evenings for food and drinks. The food is cheap, but not necessarily the cheapest you can find in Mexico. Let’s just say it’s worth your money. And what’s a vacation/trip without spoiling yourself?
Secretly I think I’ve tried a few of the best restaurants in Puerto Escondido and I’m going to share them with you of course.
I have listed my favorite spots. The only thing you have to do upon arrival in Puerto Escondido is show up at the restaurant and take a look at the menu.

1. Fish Shack €2 – 8
I think Fish Shack is the big winner here for the best fish tacos in Puerto Escondido. Maybe all over Mexico. For 50 pesos you can get a delicious, stuffed fish or shrimp taco which will fill up your tummy. Are you vegetarian but still curious about this place? I definitely recommend the cauliflower tacos! They were my friends favorite and she has a really good taste in food.
2. Piyoli €3 – 7
This is the type of restaurant that you want to visit at least once a day when you walk by. Whether it’s for a drink or a snack. It’s super healthy and super tasty. They offer mainly vegan. It’s impossible to try everything on the menu unless you’re staying in Puerto for a few weeks and come here every day.

3. Cañabrava €6 – 15
The perfect restaurant if you want to enjoy the sunset during your meal or drink. You can enjoy the view from the terrace or from the rooftop bar. The atmosphere is super chill and soothing. There is plenty of choice on the menu, both local food and other cuisines. Deafening music from the restaurant next door and screaming people on the beach can sometimes ruin the atmosphere, but hey, we are still people, aren’t we? Always good at ruining things for other people.
4. Papa Tots €1.50 – 4
Papa Tots is somewhere hidden in the center of Puerto Escondido. I randomly ended up here on my first visit and it’s been my go-to whenever I feel like a snack. Papa Tots sells fried (vegetarian) potato balls with different flavors. My favorite flavor is by far Indu. This is with curry seasoning and lentils. The menu is also full of things like burgers, salads and burritos. But please try the balls first and thank me later.
5. Smoked Fish Tacos El Viejo €2 – 4
I’ve already crowned Fish Shack the best place for fish taco’s, but this one makes a proper number two. The offer is not huge, but definitely worth it if you just spend the afternoon at the beach.
6. The Sultan €2 – 4
Super tasty falafel. You get so much for your money. In addition, many vegan and vegetarian options and a lot of choice in terms of different smoothies and juices.

7. Lychee Thai Food €5 – 9
In terms of atmosphere and cosiness, this is by far my favorite restaurant. It’ss a restaurant, but at the same time it feels like you are in a bar. They play chill music, but often also live music. The food is nice, but not the best I’ve had. In my opinion the menu doesn’t offer that much food and it’s not really authentic Thai. The cocktails I give a big 10, which is why this restaurant is worth a visit.
8. Comet space €5 – 10
My favorite place in Punta Zicatela. Comet Space is a food court with various options to eat and drink, spend money on natural care products and you can even smoke hookah. If you know me then you know that I have to smoke hookah everywhere in the world. Unfortunately, I don’t have that opportunity very often in South and Central America.
9. Spirulina €2 – 4
Popular vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Mainly healthy food and drinks. The range of smoothies is overwhelming and definitely worth trying.
The only downside to this restaurant is that the service is very slow. They hardly pay any attention to the customers. I’m very patient, but not getting your food after 1.5 hours of waiting is a bit of an exaggeration. I have actually experienced this twice at this place. Which is a shame, because it’s a chill spot to start your day or have lunch. Sometimes bad service can really ruin a place.
10. Ole Coffee €5
I actually didn’t like the food here. I went twice and I was disappointed twice. The reason why I put it on this list, because this place is always packed. Everyone seems to love it. And also because it’s cheap. All the food on the menu is 120 pesos (about 5 euros), so I get it. It just wasn’t the place for me.

These days, it’s actually unnecessary to mention that a restaurant has vegetarian options, but you’d be surprised how much meat is consumed in Central and South America. The vegan range can sometimes be very wide, and sometimes you have to actively look for it.
There are still so many restaurants in Puerto Escondido that looked great, but I think this is a great list to start with.

Enjoy your food and eat as much as you can.
