A wonderful weekend trip to Taxco

Taxco Mexico

During this trip through Mexico of almost 2.5 months I tried to visit my favorite cities again and some new places. I have completely lost my heart to Taxco. Taxco wasn’t on my list yet, but after Caroline and Kasey shared this beautiful city on instagram, I had my bus tickets ready.

The colonial town in Guerrero is known as “the city of silver”, because silver has been mined there for centuries. Now that the mining has stopped, beautiful silver objects and jewelry are sold throughout the city.

Taxco is the perfect place to walk around for hours, take pictures and fill your stomach with delicious food and drinks. Where some people do this as a day trip from Mexico City, I definitely recommend staying here for at least one night because there is so much beauty to see.

How to get to Taxco?

The best way to travel to Taxco is from Mexico City. From Terminal der Sur you take a bus that will take you to Taxco within 3 hours. There are two bus companies that go to Taxco. Estrella de Oro or Costa Line. Bus tickets are around 236 pesos (€10) for a one-way ticket.

When you arrive at the bus station, there are plenty of CUTE beetle taxis that you can take to your hotel or airbnb. The taxi to your accommodation is 30 pesos (€1.30). Just give 30 pesos without asking how much it is, otherwise they will charge you more. Because yes, everyone can see that you are a tourist.

Where to eat?

I don’t know if I ever told you this, but I only used to eat because I had to eat. I was not a food lover and that was totally fine. Since a few years that has completely changed and I love to find the best restaurants in a city.

Taxco is small, but has so much good food to offer. I’ll keep the list short because after all, you’re on another shitty travel blog and not another shitty food blog.

  • Caffeine

For your coffee to go you should definitely make a stop here. The coffees are full of flavour and there are different options to choose from.

The best place for your breakfast or lunch. It is mainly healthy food such as smoothie bowls, chia bowls and salads. Which of course, we all crave after weeks or months of eating nothing but tacos, enchiladas and burritos.

  • La intrigue

This colorful restaurant immediately draws you in when you walk past it. It’s cozy and authentic. All the local dishes from Mexico are on the menu and are as fresh as can be. The cheap cocktails are the icing on the cake.

Best view of the city with delicious cocktails. The food is a bit overpriced, but the view quickly makes you forget about that.

The perfect place for lunch or dinner when you want to relax. Restaurant looks fancy but is really affordable.

What to do in Taxco?

Basically all you need to do in Taxco is walk around. The walk will live up to all your expectations and a little more. Don’t forget to take bring all your camera gear. When I scroll back through my photo album, 1/6 of it was definitely taken in Taxco. There is just so much to see. The city almost feels magical.

  • Silver shopping

The silver mining history of Taxco has made this the city in Mexico to buy all your silverware. Everywhere you look you will find the most beautiful jewelry and silverware you have ever seen. I was secretly happy that I wear gold, otherwise I would have really had a problem with wanting to buy everything.

  • Pozas Azules de Atzala

Pozas Azules is a beautiful nature reserve that is a 40 minutes drive from Taxco. The nature reserve is the ideal get away if you want to escape the heat and take a dip in the most clear blue turquoise river and pools. There are 16 pools, 8 of which are accessible to visitors.

Note: Fewer pools are open in the low season. This can often disappoint people. Fortunately, the waterfalls are a nice extra.

The day trip to Pozas Azules can easily be done by bus. If you walk to the main street towards the bus station, where you will be dropped off on arrival, then continue straight ahead to a shop called Coppel. There, small buses go to Pozas Azules every half hour. This ride will cost you a few pesos. The entrance fee for Pozas Azules is 30 pesos (€1.30).

  • Teleferico de Taxco

Took a walk through the heat only to be told it’s closed due to maintenance and low season. Very unfortunate, because the cable car gives you a beautiful (short) view over the mountains and the city. Hopefully you can enjoy this view when you visit Taxco. Return ticket is 95 pesos (€4) and a one-way ticket is 65 pesos (€2.75).

Best views

Besides being a wonderful town, Taxco also has a number of viewpoints where you can gaze around and enjoy the beauty of it all.

  • Zocala

Zocala is Taxco’s main plaza where it’s overly crowded, like any plaza. The trick is to find a perfect setting in the many side streets where you have a view of the plaza and Templo de Santa Priscal. However, the plaza is also perfect to buy an ice cream or a snack and enjoy the people and music around you on a bench.

  • Rosa Mexicana

Rosa Mexicana is an (overpriced) restaurant, but probably has the best view of Taxco. You can just walk in and take pictures. I definitely recommend to have at least one drink and enjoy the view.

  • Christ the Redeemer Statue

On the Cerro del Atache hill you will find the statue of Christ. In 2002 this was built in 8 months. In Taxco, this is a popular attraction. A bit of a grim version of the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro, but in the end it’s all about the view. The best time to go to this viewpoint is before sunset.
