The speed limit on the tar roads are 50km/h and on gravel road the speed limit is 40km/h. Exceeding the speed limit can significantly increase the risk of an accident and can also lead to fines and other penalties.

Do not drink and drive

Even though the Kruger National Park is a nature reserve, legal traffic laws are still in place. Drinking under the influence of alcohol is punishable by law.

Respect the animals

Make sure when you stop behind someone that there is enough space between you and them, in order to move out of the position fast if need be. This is especially important when you stop to view an elephant. Elephants can suddenly (for no reason) charge, leaving you trapped in your vehicle without any space.

Feeding animals

Never ever feed or leave out any food for any animal in the Kruger National Park. Feeding animals can cause their death. If you start feeding wild animals, they lose their natural fear for humans and will approach you. It will also prevent them from being able to look for their own natural food source and at the end they will associate people with food and will then later attack humans to get food.

Roads

Not all roads are equal. Some roads are not accessible by car or are closed temporarily due to maintenance or flooding. Do not enter a closed or no entry road.

Entrance gates

Visitors visiting the Park should always keep to the time schedule and should not enter or exit the gate past any scheduled time.

Is it safe to visit Kruger national park and stay over in the park?

It is safe if you follow a few guidelines:

Do not walk alone after dark, as some animals can wander around the fenced campsites. Park authorities fence off all campsites with electric fencing, and 99% of all camps in Kruger have electricity.
When you do make use of overnight accommodation in Kruger, you should avoid walking bare feet to prevent getting stung by insects and scorpions.
Always put out your fire at night to avoid ambers from creating a veld fire or burn down your or any accommodation. Never leave your fire unattended.
Always close your windows and doors to prevent insects, spiders, scorpions and snakes etc. from entering your accommodation. Always lock your accommodation unit when you are not occupying it.
Never leave food unattended or outside your accommodation, it may attract unwanted animals like monkeys and baboons that are cute but very dangerous.
Make sure to bring bug spray and insect repellent.

Besides the entrance fee for the National Park there are a lot of costs to consider when you do a self-drive. Think of parks conservation fees, campsites or accommodation fees, food costs, petrol costs and perhaps additional tour guide costs (if you want to experience a night drive for example).

Every visitor to the Kruger National Park will pay a conservation fee for every day spent inside the Park. Contributing to conservation is the only way to raise funds to help conserve the park’s natural and cultural heritage.
